Waiting for ₦20 million from Tony Elumelu

Spread the love

Tony Elumelu, the Chairman of Heirs Holdings sat at the lounge with his left index finger on his cheek.

Dressed in a navy blue suit with a red polka tie and red socks, he cut the image of a man deep in thought, plotting the next move.

I walked up to him and greeted, ”Good day Sir, it is good to see you here today”.

He didn’t reply, his countenance showed he didn’t hear me.

I raised my voice, “Hello sir?”

He snapped out of his thoughts and turned to me, “hello there, how are you doing?”

“I am doing great sir, you seem to have a lot on your mind”

“Yeah,” he nodded his head.”

“But you are a billionaire Sir, you can afford to hire people to think for you!” I exclaimed.

“Really?’ He questioned with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes, if I am a billionaire, I will not do any work! In fact, I will be travelling around the world enjoying myself!”

Mr Tony Elumelu smiled, “What can I do for you?” He asked.

My heart jumped at the question, “Sir I need you to give me 20 million naira”

“What do you want to use the money for?” He probed.

“Well, I want to start many businesses, build a nice house, buy an expensive ride and enjoy my life!” I stated.

He shook his head, “You are looking for shortcuts, you don’t even know what business you want to venture into.”

“Sir, I want to go into the food business, I want to produce fruit juices that are in high demand,” I said.

“Okay, do you have a business plan for it?” He asked.

I scratched my head, “Err…not yet but…”

“Have you a market survey?”

“No, Sir”

He shook his head and continued, “Give me an overview of the fruit juice sector in Nigeria and tell me what will be your market share”.

“Sir, I have no idea yet but I promise to get back to you on it”

Tony Elumelu shook his head once again, “You just want me to hand over 20 million naira to you. You haven’t done any planning, you are not serious”

“Please sir, give me another chance, I just wanted to have the money first and then come up with a foolproof plan for the business.’

“Business is not done that way! You need to out lay out your plan and the steps you intend to take to achieve them. Success is a long term journey. There is no quick fix. You will make mistakes, you will have challenges but for you to succeed, you must be disciplined, resilient and make sacrifices!”

“Thank you sir” I replied.

He opened the wine bottle and poured the wine into a glass and slowly drank it.

“Sir, if you don’t mind, can you share your thought with me? I could help with a solution”

Tony Elumelu chuckled, “I am thinking of going into a new line of investment in the next quarter of the year and I am wondering which country I should situate my investment in”

“Somalia! Somalia!”I blurted out.

He stared at me in shock.
