Everything You Need to Know About the New UK Scale-Up Worker Visa

Two days ago, the UK Government announced a new kind of Visa called the Scale-up Worker Visa. What is it? Who is eligible? How can you apply? Here is everything you need to know about this new visa and how you can benefit.

A Scale-up Worker Visa is one that can enable you to come into the UK and work in a fast-growing UK company also known as ‘scale-up businesses’.

To qualify for this Visa, you must have:

  1. Secured an employment offer with a Scale-up business to work with them for at least 6 months. A Scale-up business is an advanced form of a start-up, growing and expanding at a fast rate.
  2. Received a ‘Certificate of Sponsorship’ (COS) from your employer about this said role.
  3. Ensure that this role is on the list of eligible jobs.
  4. Be paid a minimum salary of £33,000 in this new role per year or £10.10 per hour or the going rate for that job.

Which Jobs Are Eligible?

Several jobs are eligible for Scale-up Worker Visa – Accountants, Engineers, Pharmacists, Chemical Scientists, Biological Scientists, Physical Scientists, Architects, IT Specialists, Software Developers, Doctors (GP, Anasthetists, Radiologists, Paediatricians), Nurses, Midwives, Optometrists, Opticians, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Teachers (Primary, Secondary, University teachers), Special Needs Teachers, Barristers, Surveyors.

To land this visa, you will need to get an employment offer from a Scale-up company in the UK. Once they provide you with COS, you can apply for this Visa.

How Long Can You Stay on This Visa?

The Scale-up Worker Visa is valid for 2 years. After 2 years, you can extend it by 3 years and can decide to extend it every 3 years. After 5 years on the visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) – permanent residency in the UK. A year after the ILR, you can apply for British citizenship.

Cost of This Visa

The Scale-up Worker Visa costs a total of £1,963 per person: £715 –  Visa application fee, £1248 – Immigration Health Surcharge for 2 years (£624 per year).

You will also need to have the naira equivalent of £1,270 in your account to cover living expenses when you arrive in the UK.

Can Your Partner and Children Come With You?

Yes. Your spouse and children less than 18 can apply with you as your dependants. If you are coming with your partner and children, you will need to keep the naira equivalent of this extra amount in your account to show you can support them: £285 for your partner, £315 for one child, £200 for each additional child.

What Else Do You Need to Apply?

During the Visa application, you will need to demonstrate proof of English proficiency using either IELTS, Pearson PTE, LanguageCert or UK NARIC/ECCTIS.
